Now is a great time to start planning the implementation of The Dictionary Project in your Lodges!  With school starting in the fall, starting now gives you time to determine what school(s) you would like to approach, work out a budget, and plan for fundraising.

The Dictionary Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that began in 1995, with the purpose of distributing dictionaries to as many third-grade students as possible.  Third-grade students were chosen because educators have seen that level as a time when students are transitioning from “learning to read to reading to learn.”

In the 2004-2005 Lodge year, the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks adopted this program and have distributed over 4.1 million books so far!

Take a peek at how this program works by visiting the website dictionaryproject.org where you can see over 30 different types of dictionaries and reference books available to order, as well as information on how to best to contact schools, raise funds, order the books, etc.  The site even has a tool to let you know what schools in your area have or have not participated in this program, or if they are already being served by another organization.

The Dictionary Project is a great way for your Lodge to become more visible in the community, benefit children at the perfect age for these tools, and, your Lodge can get up to 25 points for the All American Contest A!
