Special Olympics 24 Hour Super Plunge

Dec 13, 2024 | News Archives

Cold, often defined as a low temperature compared to the human body – “I feel cold”. Now what if, you choose, to deliberately be cold. To subject your body to the harshness of the cold every hour, upon the hour. To do so, for 24 hours. Or to subject yourself to the cold for 3-6 minutes, 1 time. Now imagine doing any of this in the cold waters of the Long Island Sound. Some will say that this is just crazy. Others will say that it’s an Adrenaline Rush. But context makes things clearer. It allows for a more objective view.
Four brave souls: Mike Stewart, PSP, PDD; Jamie Sienna, PDD; Holly June Jacobs, ER and David Perregaux, ER chose to jump into the water for 24 consecutive hours. This event was the Law Enforcement Torch Run Super Plunge. The Lodge Plunge Event (Wethersfield/Rocky Hill took home the Lodge Trophy. Who will challenge them next year for that Trophy?) allowed for members of various Lodges to challenge themselves and other Lodges to jump into the water as well on November 23-24, 2024. All participants willingly submitted to this challenge in order to support Special Olympics, CT. The brave men and women Elks who jumped into the cold waters did so in order to raise awareness of Special Olympics and to raise money for them. In fact, we all can be proud of the participants, plungers and donors, because the funds raised was over $56,000.00. WOW! Now that’s not chump change. As impressive as it sounds and looks, it’s really a living manifestation of our motto: “Elks Care, Elks Share”.
The Special Olympics, CT. team are beyond surprised and grateful at what we can do as an organization to help support the Athletes/individuals of Special Olympics but also help improve their lives as members of our local communities. Your involvement, and participation in these activities help prove that as a Fraternity, much good can still be achieved. The Special Olympics Committee, thank you for your support and participation in these activities. We also can’t wait to see what else can we all do and achieve in the future.
Respectfully,
Special Olympics Committee
