The
Connecticut Elks Association Soccer Shoot Committee participated in the
Connecticut Special Olympics Urban Youth Day. Urban Youth Day allows
children from Inner Cities with special needs (and within the criteria of
Special Olympics) the opportunity to become familiar with, and hopefully
become an active participant, in the Special Olympics. The Connecticut Elks
are working with the Connecticut Special Olympics to have Soccer Shoot
become an event in the Special Olympics at both at the local level and at
the State Games. This fits well within the theme of “If you can kick it, you
can participate in it.”

The Connecticut Elks set up the small goal system and one hundred & fifty
seven (157) children took their turn kicking in the Soccer Shoot venue.
There was not one child who participated that did not score at least one
point, but there were plenty of smiles and cheers to go around.
Discussions with the Connecticut Special Olympics Executive Board members,
coaches & teachers have concluded this is a success. They would like Soccer
Shoot to continue to get involved at upcoming Connecticut Area & Regional
Games as well as being an exhibition at the State Games in June. The Soccer
Shoot would be set up at the fields where the Unified Soccer Games will be
held and this would allow Special Olympians to participate during breaks of
their soccer games. In addition, it will allow the Elks to speak with Soccer
coaches and others to explain the contest and see how we can make this a
true event. We also hope to have the Grid Goal System set up to allow the
older Olympians to participate
As
the Connecticut Elks progress towards making soccer Shoot an event in the
Special Olympics, I will continue to keep the GL – Youth Activities
Committee informed.
