Hartford Distributor Inc. Benefit Held

By Lisa Berthiaume PER

A pasta fund raiser was held Thursday, August 26 hosted by the Manchester Lodge to benefit the victims of the August 3 shooting tragedy at Hartford Distributor's Inc. located in Manchester, CT.  Nearly 600 people were in attendance that evening and raised over $13,000 – and the donations are still coming in.  We would like to thank the individuals, the Town of Manchester and over 80 businesses  who contributed food, services and prizes.   There were 45 Elk volunteers and approximately 35 non-Elk volunteers including representatives from the Teamsters Local #1035, Chartwells-School Dining Service, Scot Haney and Teresa LaBarbera from WFSB, Emblem Club #251, Mayor Louis Spadaccini and Deputy Mayor Leo Diana, and friends and co-workers from Hartford Distributors.  A 'tip of the antlers' goes out to Linda Sherman, Lodge Permittee, who spearheaded the event.  We enjoyed the company and support of visiting Elks from Hamden, New Britain, Willimantic, Wallingford, Windsor and Wethersfield/Rocky Hill.  Check out this video report from NBC Connecticut News featuring Phil Stender PER.

Elks of Connecticut Donate $100,000 to CCMC

By John Barry PDD, CEA Major Projects Chairman

This year’s gift to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center's Safe Kids program from the Elks of Connecticut has hit a milestone.  With this year's donation of $100,000 the Connecticut Elks Association and the Lodge of our state have donated a total of $1,000,000.00 in support of our state major project.

Beginning in 1999 the Connecticut Elks Association became a title sponsor for the Safe Kids program.  Over the years the donations of the CEA and it's local Lodges have gone towards the enhancement of the facilities at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

With the advent of the Safe Kids program the focus has changed to injury prevention rather than treatment and provided an opportunity for the Lodges of Connecticut to become involved in injury prevention statewide. The Elks of Connecticut have been providing the facilities and personnel to run car seat clinics, bike rodeos and safety fairs.

Pictured left to right are Martin J. Gavin President & CEO of CCMC, Daniel Skiba PSP PDD and William J. Chinn Jr. PDD our current CEA President at the recent check presentation at CCMC.

State Ritual Team at the Grand Lodge Convention

By Pete Nelson PER, CEA Ritual Chairman

Danielson Lodge ended up posting a score of 96.1504 which was good enough for 8th place in the Eastern Division. That score was also good enough for finishing 10th in the Country overall.

Jerilynn Pacheco's score was 94.661 which was the winning score and earned her the title of ALL-
AMERICAN ESQUIRE in the East!  The second place score was 94.626 - it was that close.
Also the Lecturing Knight from Danielson James Paquin just missed the ALL-AMERICAN title by .293!

Congratulations to the entire team from Danielson, and also A SUPER CONGRATULATIONS to Jerilynn Pacheco our newest ALL-AMERICAN, and to James Paquin for his effort. As always Danielson once again did an outstanding job and we here in Connecticut are extremely proud of them and their accomplishments.

Area 1 Roulette Contest

By Pete Nelson PER, CEA Ritual Chairman

On Sunday the 19th of September 2010 the Area 1 Interstate Relations Committee will be holding the Roulette contest in Nashua, NH.

The four main chairs are drawn for just before the Lodge enters the contest room. The Inner Guard, Esquire, and Chaplin are already assigned before the contest.  Anyone interested in participating should please let me know ASAP, so that a practice schedule and location can be arranged.

As I receive more information about lodging for the weekend I will pass it along. The festivities and camaraderie at these events are second to none. So if you would like to give it a shot step forward and have a good time while you make new friends across the New England States. Our team from Connecticut will go on at 2pm.

Special Olympics Gets Kick Out Of Soccer Shoot

By Terry Ford PDD, CEA Vice-President Northwest

The Connecticut Elks Association Soccer Shoot Committee participated in the Connecticut Special Olympics Urban Youth Day. Urban Youth Day allows children from Inner Cities with special needs (and within the criteria of Special Olympics) the opportunity to become familiar with, and hopefully become an active participant, in the Special Olympics. The Connecticut Elks are working with the Connecticut Special Olympics to have Soccer Shoot become an event in the Special Olympics at both at the local level and at the State Games. This fits well within the theme of “If you can kick it, you can participate in it.”

The Connecticut Elks set up the small goal system and one hundred & fifty seven (157) children took their turn kicking in the Soccer Shoot venue. There was not one child who participated that did not score at least one point, but there were plenty of smiles and cheers to go around.

Discussions with the Connecticut Special Olympics Executive Board members, coaches & teachers have concluded this is a success. They would like Soccer Shoot to continue to get involved at upcoming Connecticut Area & Regional Games as well as being an exhibition at the State Games in June. The Soccer Shoot would be set up at the fields where the Unified Soccer Games will be held and this would allow Special Olympians to participate during breaks of their soccer games. In addition, it will allow the Elks to speak with Soccer coaches and others to explain the contest and see how we can make this a true event. We also hope to have the Grid Goal System set up to allow the older Olympians to participate

As the Connecticut Elks progress towards making soccer Shoot an event in the Special Olympics, I will continue to keep the GL – Youth Activities Committee informed.
